Eagles Cut WR Samori Toure, RB Carson Steele

Toure emerged as a deep-ball threat at Nebraska in 2021. He had spent four years at Montana before transferring to the Cornhuskers and sitting out the COVID-19-shortened 2020 season. A favorite target of a Adrian Martinez in Lincoln, he led the team in receptions (46), receiving yards (898), and touchdowns (5), averaging 19.5 yards per catch in his lone season with the team.

Toure’s performance got him selected in the seventh-round of the 2022 NFL Draft by the Packers. In a crowded room, led by Allen Lazard, Christian Watson, Romeo Doubs, and Randall Cobb, Toure only managed five catches for 82 yards and a touchdown as a rookie. While Lazard and Cobb departed in 2023 and Watson only played nine games due to injury, Toure was still unable to take advantage of any increase in opportunities as Jayden Reed and Dontayvion Wicks took over key roles in the receiving corps next to Doubs.

The Packers cut Toure before the 2024 season, and over the past two years, he has migrated on reserve/futures and practice squad deals with the Bears, Broncos, and Saints. The only team to call him up for action was New Orleans last year. He caught one pass for three yards in one game appearance. He signed with the Eagles about three months ago. Behind a top four group of DeVonta Smith, Dontayvion Wicks, Makai Lemon, and Marquise Brown, Philadelphia has a number of interesting options competing for however few spots remain at the position, but Toure will no longer be in contention.

Steele was seen as a major talent through two years at Ball State. In his sophomore campaign with the Cardinals, he totaled 1,556 yards and 14 touchdowns on the ground. He transferred to UCLA for his junior season and went undrafted after putting up 847 rushing yards and six touchdowns for the Bruins. Steele signed with the Chiefs, securing a spot on the 53-man roster as a fullback, kick returner, and special teamer. He finished his rookie year with 183 rushing yards, 26 receiving yards, and 138 kick return yards.

Despite his versatility and athleticism, Steele was hurt by three fumbles in limited touches. He failed to make Kansas City’s 53-man roster in Year 2 and spent his entire sophomore campaign on the team’s practice squad. He signed a reserve/futures deal with the Eagles after the Chiefs’ season ended and spent the offseason with Philadelphia. The team doesn’t have a fullback on the roster, but with a number of talented, versatile rushers led by Saquon Barkley, Tank Bigsby, Will Shipley, and Dameon Pierce, Steele’s skill set does not appear to be needed.
