Eagles fans are reminded of Chip Kelly's horrific trade that cost him his job

The Chip Kelly era in Philadelphia was a wild ride that Eagles fans would like to forget about. So let's talk about the worst trade he ever made.

In the aftermath of the surprising Jalen Ramsey trade that involved three players, CBS Sports writer Jeff Kerr looked at eight of the most shocking player-for-player trades in the NFL since 2000. Kerr had listed at number four the 2015 Eagles trade that sent LeSean McCoy to the Buffalo Bills for linebacker Kiko Alonso.

"In one of the most shocking trades of the century, the Philadelphia Eagles traded McCoy to the Buffalo Bills for Alonso in a rare player-for-player exchange. McCoy was one of the best running backs in the game, having the third-most rushing yards (6,792) and fourth-most rushing touchdowns (44) since entering the league in 2009. The two-time All-Pro was coming off a season during which he rushed for 1,319 yards -- third-most in the NFL.

Alonso was coming off a torn ACL after finishing second in NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year voting in 2013, missing the prior season. He lasted just one year with the Eagles before being dealt to the Dolphins, as Howie Roseman resumed the general manager role following Chip Kelly's dismissal.

McCoy made three Pro Bowls with the Bills and had two 1,000-yard seasons. He had 3,814 rushing yards and 25 touchdowns in four seasons in Buffalo."

Kelly's fatal trade set the Eagles back, but opened the door to a bright future

2015 was the offseason of horrors for Eagles fans. Besides the McCoy trade, Philadelphia was involved in another horrible player-for-player trade as Nick Foles was sent to the St. Louis Rams for Sam Bradford. Kelly also let fan favorite receiver Jeremy Maclin sign with the Kansas City Chiefs in the offseason.

It was supposed to be a big offseason for the Eagles as they had signed DeMarco Murray to replace McCoy, and cornerback Byron Maxwell was set to be the primary starter. To say none of those moves panned out is an understatement.

Philadelphia finished with a 7-9 record, and Kelly was fired a game before the season ended. Howie Roseman took back the general manager role and hired Doug Pederson as head coach, as the two would win the Super Bowl just two years later.

Alonso, Bradford, Maxwell, and Murray were all gone after one season. It was the Eagles' way to tear apart everything Kelly had put together to start over fresh.

It all worked out at the end of the day, but the McCoy-Alonso trade was the first trade the team made that set the tone for what would be a miserable 2015 season. One bad season by the Eagles helped them get the right pieces in place to win a Super Bowl in 2017, so while it was terrible to watch, fans were rewarded in the long run.
