Of course, the commanding storyline this week has been surrounding Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver A.J. Brown and his lack of production through four games.
After his two-catch, seven-yard performance in the Eagles' 31-25 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Brown's viral cryptic post on social media set the team's world on fire. Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni and offensive coordinator Kevin Patullo had to calm everyone down, and Brown himself had to set the record straight on his post.
Even with that story now in the rearview mirror, that won't stop with the questions surrounding the struggles of the offense and, in particular, the passing game. Everyone has been so fixated on the Hurts-Brown combo that they forget there's another top receiver who is being lost in the shuffle.
Smith has stayed quiet through the last four weeks, despite all the problems going on with the offense. He's actually been productive on offense and one of the very few bright spots in the passing game.
After four games, Smith leads the team in receptions (17) and yards (158), while adding a touchdown catch. His production stems from the fact that he has caught 17 of his 20 targets, an 85% catch percentage. Granted, a lot of them are coming off bubble screens his way, but he has made the most of his touches.
It does lead some to wonder why Smith hasn't gotten the ball more than he should. Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni addressed this concern with the media on Wednesday.
“These guys know that they’re great football players, and want to do things to contribute to help us win football games," Sirianni said via Bleeding Green Nation. "And, to me, that’s normal, and we want to get them the ball. So we have to do our job as coaches to help them get the ball; they’re great players, and then we all have to execute in that situation.”
“What I see from DeVonta (Smith) is him coming to work every single day, working to get better because that’s the things he can control — how do I get better today to put myself in the best position to make plays and win the game on Sunday.”
At some point, this passing game is going to get rolling and when it does, watch for Smith to be that reliable, deep ball threat that Eagles fans have been accustomed to seeing throughout his career.
