There's plenty of intriguing matchups going into Week 3 of the 2025 NFL season, as the Philadelphia Eagles taking on the Los Angeles Rams is at the top of the list.
The Eagles and Rams are both undefeated going into the game at 2-0, and it is a rematch of last year's NFC Divisional Round matchup. It's most memorable to Eagles fans with Saquon Barkley busting out a massive touchdown run in the fourth quarter, giving them enough of a lead to win the game.
While this is a critical matchup early in the regular season, this might not be the only one that Eagles fans might want to watch in the 1:00 pm EST window. One of their most polarizing first-round picks is set to make his debut as the starting quarterback of the Minnesota Vikings.
Eagles fans will remember that the team traded for Sam Howell last month with the Vikings, so they can have a more reliable third stringer with Tanner McKee hurt and rookie Kyle McCord struggling in the preseason. As part of that deal, the Vikings were able to find a suitable backup for young quarterback J.J. McCarthy as they signed Wentz.
McCarthy got hurt in last week's loss to the Atlanta Falcons. Wentz was named as the starter for Minnesota against the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday. The memories are starting to flow back for Eagles fans.
Wentz was the second overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft after the Eagles traded up to select him. It all started great as his 2017 season looked like an MVP year for him, but an ACL injury late in the year against the Rams cost him the rest of the year, and for Nick Foles to be the hero Philly looked at to bring home the Lombardi Trophy for the first time in franchise history.
It only got worse from there, as Wentz continued to get injured in key moments, with 2020 being the breaking point for the franchise, as he was benched in favor of rookie second-round pick Jalen Hurts. And the rest they say is history, as Wentz threw for 16,811 yards and 113 touchdowns to 50 interceptions in five years.
The Eagles traded Wentz to the Indianapolis Colts, which sent the bruised-up quarterback to bounce between four teams from 2021 to 2024. He went 12-14 as a starter in that span and just was never the same quarterback as he was before the ACL injury in 2017.
Eagles fans will have their feelings on Wentz, but the 32-year-old quarterback at least gets his shot to potentially start for multiple weeks in Minnesota. Can he find that same magic that made him great eight years ago?
