The Philadelphia Eagles brought back veteran slot cornerback Avonte Maddox on a one-year deal after releasing him during NFL free agency in March.
At the time, Eagles had not addressed their slot cornerback need, so re-signing him made since at the time.
But now with a crowded room of 14 cornerbacks, including 2024 first and second round draft picks Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean, it will be interesting to see what Maddox's role ends up being in 2024.
According to several reporters in attendance at OTAs this week, defensive coordinator Vic Fangio had Maddox taking first-team reps in the slot and cross-trainined him at safety.

Maddox makes the most sense in the slot since he's experienced and has play a majority of his snaps there, but being able to fill in at safety gives him a better chance at making the 53-man roster given how many corners the Eagles have to pick from.
When healthy, Maddox is reliable in the slot and has logged a combined 245 tackles, 13 tackles for loss, 31 pass deflections, four interceptions, three sacks, eight forced fumbles, and a fumble recovery through 64 career games (38 starts)
But that's the problem -- Maddox has had a hard time staying healthy over the last two years and has only seen action in 14 games.
In addition to Maddox, DeJean also took reps at both positions.
DeJean has never played safety during a live game, though he practiced the position in college.
The Eagles depth at safety is currently weak behind C.J. Gardner Johnson and Reed Blankenship as Sydney Brown makes his way back from a torn ACL.
If Maddox ends up starting in the slot, he could also provide emergency depth at safety if needed if he keeps up working both postitions.
