The Philadelphia Eagles got a massive injury scare when Pro Bowl left guard Landon Dickerson left practice Sunday night with a knee injury. Monday afternoon, they got the “best case scenario” regarding his injury update:

This is a huge break for the Eagles. What looked to possibly be a season-ending injury might not cost Dickerson any time at all. Dickerson even looks to possibly be able to play in the Eagles’ Week 1 matchup just a little over three weeks from today.

What if Dickerson Can’t Play in Week 1?

If Dickerson is unable to play in Week 1, what would the Eagles’ other options be? Eagles Offensive Line Coach Jeff Stoutland will have multiple options.

The first option would be to keep the offensive line as is and slot in a backup for Dickerson. The other option would be to move current right guard Tyler Steen to left guard. This would allow a backup to start at right guard. Whether that backup is currently on the roster or not is a question that still remains.

As far as the Eagles’ internal options, seven-year veteran Matt Pryor would likely get the nod. Whether it is at left or right guard remains to be seen, but it would most likely be right guard. He has started 39 games across his NFL career, with 20 of those starts being at right guard. Pryor’s versatility is clearly valuable to the Eagles. He has at least one start on every position on the offensive line aside from center.

There are other options on the roster as well. Some include Kenyon Green and Brett Toth. Green was acquired in the Eagles’ trade with the Houston Texans earlier this offseason. He has 23 starts in his NFL career with time at both guard positions. The Eagles may not be very high on him, though. The former first-round pick was playing with the third unit in the Eagles’ first preseason game. He played deep into the third quarter before suffering a wrist injury. On the other hand, Toth stepped in to play for Dickerson after the injury in practice. He offers some experience as he has played the position in the past, as Toth started three games for the Carolina Panthers last year.

Early Season Effects

Missing one of your best players is never ideal. Especially when you are facing two of the best pass rushers in the league in the first two weeks. The Eagles kick off the season against the Dallas Cowboys. Although their star pass rusher Micah Parsons’ status for Week 1 is up in the air, it would be a big blow for the Eagles not to have Dickerson against them. The next week, they travel to Kansas City to take on Chris Jones and the Chiefs. With Jones doing much of his work as an interior pass rusher, the Eagles can ill afford to miss him. Hopefully, Dickerson is able to heal as soon as he can so the Eagles’ offense can get back to full strength.
