Philadelphia Eagles running back Saquon Barkley underwent tests Monday after leaving the team’s loss to the Los Angeles Rams with a hamstring injury.
Barkley was hurt on a six-yard run in the first quarter and did not return. He finished with two carries for eight yards and one catch for two yards.
NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported that Barkley is going to be considered week-to-week for the Eagles. He notes that it’s not expected to be a long-term injury.
The timeline remains unclear with no target return date set. Head coach Nick Sirianni said the team will have more answers Wednesday.
Barkley entered the game averaging 5.1 yards per carry. He has 182 rushing yards on 36 attempts this season with no touchdowns through four games.
The 29-year-old also dealt with a stinger in Week 2 against the Tennessee Titans that limited him to the second half of that win. He wore a protective collar Sunday as a precaution.
The Eagles fell 24-20 at Lincoln Financial Field. The offense already operated without wide receiver DeVonta Smith (hamstring), tight end Dallas Goedert (knee) and right tackle Lane Johnson, who was scratched for personal reasons.
Backup running back Tank Bigsby took over after Barkley exited and carried the ball 13 times for 54 yards. Bigsby later left with a core muscle injury that requires surgery and a stay on injured reserve.
That leaves Will Shipley as the only healthy running back on the active roster. Shipley could handle the bulk of the work if Barkley sits out the upcoming game.
Philadelphia travels to London next week to face the Jacksonville Jaguars. Practice squad options such as Dameon Pierce remain available if the team needs to elevate depth.
The Eagles are missing multiple opening-day starters on both sides of the ball. Edge rusher Jonathan Greenard also exited Sunday with an ankle injury.
Barkley rushed for more than 2,000 yards and earned All-Pro honors in 2024 during his first season with the club. His production has been solid on a per-carry basis this year despite the lack of scores.
Soft-tissue injuries like hamstring strains often require careful management to avoid setbacks. The week-to-week designation typically signals at least one missed game.
The backfield depth chart has thinned quickly after Bigsby’s surgery. Philadelphia will monitor Barkley’s progress through the week before finalizing plans for the international matchup.
