Eagles GM Howie Roseman sounds ready to spend 2024 picks

Does anyone really expect Eagles general manager Howie Roseman to sit on his hands without picks in the fourth, fifth and six rounds in the 2023 NFL Draft? Thanks to compensation picks in 2024, he won’t have to.

According to Jimmy Kempski of Phillyvoice.com, Philadelphia should have 12 selections in next year’s draft including four projected compensatory picks after losing substantial players during 2023 free agency.

The loss of DT Javon Hargrave will most-likely bring the team an extra third-round pick next year, OG Isaac Seumalo and OT Andre Dillard could be worth a fifth-round selection and C.J. Gardner Johnson’s departure will most-likely be worth a sixth-round pick.

While compensatory picks can’t be made official until next offseason, the promise of extra picks could be enough to get Roseman back into the middle rounds of this year’s draft. During a recent press conference with head coach Nick Sirianni, Roseman made reference to the team’s 2024 haul with some prophetic words.

"We’ll get four comp picks next year, so already — it’s kind of unusual. Certainly, since I’ve been here, I don’t remember being in a situation where we have 12 picks before this year’s draft for next year’s draft. We’ll probably have two after this draft."

To no one’s surprise, it sounds like those 12 picks are already burning a hole in Roseman’s pocket. According to USA Today’s Glenn Erby, Philly’s hyperactive GM made over 38 draft-day trades over the last decade. During last year’s draft, he traded a first-round pick to the Titans for wide receiver A.J. Brown.

It’s always good to have more picks, but twelve picks in any draft is a lot. The Houston Texans lead the NFL with twelve of their own in this year’s draft, but no one believes they’ll make twelve selections.

No one expects Roseman to go empty-handed in the draft’s middle rounds, either. Expect him to package a few picks in 2024 to get more picks and add much-needed depth for 2023.
