Eagles HC Nick Sirianni hints at QB competition between Carson Wentz, Jalen Hurts

The Philadelphia Eagles are reportedly committed to keeping Carson Wentz for the 2021 season. They just haven't committed to him as the team's starting quarterback yet.

Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni made an appearance on SportsRadio 94WIP on Monday, hinting that there might be a quarterback competition between Wentz and Jalen Hurts ahead of the 2021 campaign.

"A core value, is competition," Sirianni said. "That's competition every where. Everybody is going to compete. I am going to compete with [offensive coordinator] Shane [Steichen] on things. We're going to compete in the building with coaches. Competition is the core value that we're going to use for every single position that we have here with the Philadelphia Eagles."

When asked point-blank if there would be a quarterback competition, Sirianni said:

"Yeah. Everybody in this situation competition, players, coaches, every position."

Since taking over as head coach of the Eagles, Sirianni has been rather silent about the quarterback situation. Monday's comments on SportsRadio 94WIP is the closest he has come to say that the two will compete for a job.

At this point, it's not even clear if Wentz will remain with the franchise. The Eagles were telling head-coaching candidates that they plan to keep Wentz onboard. However, the 28-year-old will reportedly seek a trade if Hurts is chosen as the team's starter.

Wentz was one of Philadelphia's biggest problems during the 2020 season. In 12 games, the North Dakota St. product went 3-8-1, completing 57.4% of his passes for 2,620 yards and 16 touchdowns against an NFL-leading 15 interceptions.

He was eventually benched in favor of Hurts, but the Alabama and Oklahoma product didn't prove that he could be Philadelphia's franchise quarterback, going 1-3 with 1,061 yards and six touchdowns against four picks.

A QB competition seems like the best way to settle things, but one player could be very unhappy once the 2021 season begins.
