Eagles' Jalen Carter is "ready to kill the Cowboys"

Jalen Carter had a lot to say in the days leading up to his first NFL training camp, but nothing meant more to Eagles fans than what he said about his team’s most hated rival.

While speaking at his annual youth football camp, Carter had this to say to Sports Illustrated's Isaiah DeAnda Delgado:

“I’m ready to turn up, make a big impact this season, every game.” Carter said, “And I’m ready to kill the Cowboys. Everybody got beef with ‘em, I might as well join the wave.”

Philadelphians will love that last part. While it doesn’t take much to get them angry, nothing gets under Eagles fans’ collective skin quite like the Dallas Cowboys. In fact, many Eagles fans care only about beating the Cowboys. They’d be perfectly happy if the team went 2-15 this year, provided both wins come against Dallas.

But why such hatred? Some believe it all started in 1967 when the Cowboys’ Lee Roy Jordan broke Timmy Brown’s jaw and knocked out six of his teeth. The Eagles wide receiver claims he was told prior to the game that the Cowboys had a bounty on him.

Others say Philly’s hatred started during the NFL players strike of 1987. Back then high-profile Dallas players like Tony Dorsett and Randy White crossed the picket line to beat the Eagles replacement team 41-22. The Eagles were one of seven teams without a player defection at that time.

Of course, nothing builds hatred among an NFL fan base like losing does. According to statmuse.com, the Cowboys have a 74-50 record against the Eagles all-time, including a 17-3 run in the 1970s. Their three Super Bowl championships in the 1990s didn’t help either.

Things have gotten better for the Eagles recently. Since 2000, the team owns a 24-22 record against the Cowboys, but it’s good to see Carter getting familiar with the history of the rivalry.

This year the Eagles welcome Dallas to Lincoln Financial Field on November 5th and travel to AT&T Stadium to face the Cowboys for a Sunday night game on December 10.
