Eagles' Josh Sweat out after emergency procedure for 'life-threatening situation'

Philadelphia Eagles defensive end Josh Sweat will not play against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday after undergoing an emergency procedure to address a "life-threatening situation" earlier this week.

"On Tuesday night, Josh Sweat was admitted to the hospital. He underwent an emergency procedure due to the severity of the matter. The doctors addressed a life-threatening situation," the Eagles said in a statement, via ESPN. "In the following days, Josh and our medical team did everything possible to help him return to play. He improved every day but it was determined by the doctors today that he was not quite ready. The fact that Josh came so close to playing is a credit to his toughness and our medical staff."

Further details of Sweat's condition remain unknown. Eagles coach Nick Sirianni told reporters earlier in the week that the pass-rusher was dealing with abdominal pain and was questionable to play Sunday. He was listed on the Eagles injury report with an "illness" and did not participate in practices.

Sweat, 24, finished the regular season with 7.5 sacks, which tied for the team lead with Javon Hargrave. Sweat ended the year especially strong with four sacks in his last four games.

The Eagles had just 29 sacks in the regular season, second-fewest in the NFL. No team gave up fewer sacks than the Buccaneers, who allowed 23.
