Eagles 'losing leverage' in Carson Wentz trade talks?

The Philadelphia Eagles may not be as close as some thought late last week to trading wantaway quarterback Carson Wentz to the Indianapolis Colts or any other team.

On Tuesday afternoon, Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio poured cold water over rumors linking Wentz with the Chicago Bears, which seemingly would leave only the Colts in the running for Wentz's services, per previous reports.

Wentz may want to reunite with current Indianapolis head coach Frank Reich, his former offensive coordinator with the Eagles, and former Eagles quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator Press Taylor, who joined the Colts on Tuesday. That shouldn't leave Philadelphia in a hurry to accept pennies on the dollar for a one-time Most Valuable Player candidate who just finished his fifth NFL season.

However, the Colts don't need to get this deal done immediately following the retirement of longtime veteran Philip Rivers. The new league year doesn't officially open until March 17, and it doesn't appear other clubs are knocking Philadelphia's door down to trade for Wentz ahead of Valentine's Day.

Of the three teams mentioned, the Eagles are in the weakest position for negotiations since both Chicago and Indianapolis could look toward so-called "bridge quarterbacks" for the 2021 season. This would leave the Eagles stuck with Wentz and his massive contract for another year, something both the Bears and Colts could use to their advantage in potential discussions.
