Since entering the NFL as a third-round pick in 2022, Nakobe Dean has been viewed as a cornerstone for the Philadelphia Eagles’ linebacker corps. The former Georgia standout carved a role in the defense and was expected to take on even more responsibility in 2024 before his season was cut short.
Dean went down on Jan. 13 with a torn patellar tendon, an ailment that required surgery and forced him to miss the remainder of the year, including Philadelphia’s run to the Super Bowl. The setback was a blow for both player and team, as Dean’s instincts and range had become critical in Vic Fangio’s defensive scheme.
On Wednesday, the Eagles announced they have officially opened Nakobe Dean’s 21-day practice window, signaling his progress toward a potential return. As part of the same roster move, the team also signed linebacker Antwuan Powell-Ryland to the practice squad.
The decision comes at a critical moment, as fellow linebacker Nolan Smith was recently placed on injured reserve after straining his triceps in Week 3 against the Los Angeles Rams, with a return date set for Nov. 10, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Dean’s return would be a major boost to Philadelphia’s defense. A former defensive captain in college, Dean recorded 30 tackles and a sack across five games in 2023 and followed up with 80 solo tackles, 48 assists, 3.0 sacks, two fumble recoveries and one interception in 15 games before his injury.
His presence in the middle of the field provides stability to a unit that has already ranked among the league’s best through four weeks. The Eagles are 4-0 and have allowed 22 points per game, while thriving against both the pass and run.
While Dean continues to work his way back to full recovery, Philadelphia will host the Denver Broncos (2-2) in Week 5 at Lincoln Financial Field. Kickoff is scheduled for Sunday at 1 p.m. ET, with FOX carrying the broadcast.
