Eagles make roster moves amid long snapper Charley Hughlett's injury

Philadelphia Eagles veteran long snapper Charley Huglett is dealing with a neck injury, which has led the team to make some roster moves for reinforcement.

The team announced via X/Twitter that they have signed long snapper Christian Johnstone and, in a corresponding move, waived defensive back BJ Mayes.

Johnstone played five seasons at Appalachian State before going undrafted this past April. He participated in the Denver Broncos Rookie Minicamp right after the draft.

As for Mayes, he signed with the Eagles as an undrafted free agent out of Texas A&M back in May. According to reports, he had been taking reps with the third-team defense throughout the Eagles' training camp, and it's clear he did not do enough to stick around.

Hughlett, who was limited in Sunday's practice with his neck injury, was the only long snapper on the Eagles' 90-man roster before the Eagles brought in Johnstone. He spent 10 seasons with the Cleveland Browns, playing in 152 career games, before agreeing to a one-year deal with Philly in NFL free agency.

Depending on how Hughlett's neck is feeling this week, it's possible we could see Johnstone take his place in the Eagles' first preseason game, which kicks off on Thursday, August 7, against the Cincinnati Bengals.
