Eagles may cut ties with $51 million player after rare Howie Roseman miss

For as many great moves that Philadelphia Eagles general manager Howie Roseman has made in his long career, there are some he would like to have back.

Before the last four years of great NFL Drafts, Roseman missed on wide receivers as he picked J.J. Arcega-Whiteside over D.K. Metcalf, and he chose Jalen Reagor one pick ahead of Justin Jefferson. Even some trades have not worked out for Roseman, with many seeing the Jahan Dotson trade as a whiff.

One signing from last offseason hurt the Eagles' pocketbooks, with very little value returned on the investment. Eagles edge rusher Bryce Huff has been a massive disappointment, which might lead him to be out the door in just a little over a year with the team.

Eagles DE Bryce Huff is a prime candidate to still be released before the 2025 season

Bleacher Report writer Kristopher Knox named one player on each NFL team who can still be released before the season begins. With the Eagles' offseason moves off the edge, if Huff doesn't prove his worth or the team can't find a suitable trade partner, he could get the pink slip.

"The Philadelphia Eagles made several brilliant moves last offseason, but they may have whiffed on pass-rusher Bryce Huff. A year after tallying 10 sacks for the Jets, he logged just 2.5 for the Eagles."

"This offseason, Philly added Josh Uche and Azeez Ojulari before drafting Antwaun Powell-Ryland. Cutting Huff would cost the Eagles $29.3 million in dead cap but could open up reps for players who may contribute on a more consistent basis."

"If Howie Roseman can't find a trade partner to take Huff, he could be cut."

Huff signed a three-year, $51 million contract with Philadelphia last offseason to replace Haason Reddick. That didn't quite turn out to be the case as he racked up an underwhelming 12 tackles, four quarterback hits, 2.5 sacks, and one forced fumble in 12 games. He missed time due to a torn ligament in his wrist.

What makes this hurt so much more for the Eagles is that Huff was coming off a 10-sack season with the New York Jets in 2023. He finished his four-season Jets career with 17.5 sacks.

Roseman brought in reinforcements, or at least competition, to help push Huff with Uche and
Ojulari. It will make it much tougher for Huff to earn a starting job or get on the roster with those guys, but the Eagles are more inclined to give Huff a chance so they can make something out of the deal.

Huff's current cap hit on the Eagles for 2025 is about $7.4 million. Philadelphia would look at roughly $29 million in dead cap if Huff departs from the team this season.

That would make a release or cut a financial burden on the Eagles. With Super Bowl aspirations on the minds of Philadelphia in back-to-back years, a move like this could be a band-aid looking to be ripped off.
