The Philadelphia Eagles' young defense has given many in the media concerns about their youth and lack of experience, but one of the players who was being questioned is no longer a concern.
Tuesday was the only day the Eagles held their mandatory minicamp, as the team is off for the next month and a half until training camp in July. Philadelphia's brass had to be pleased to see one of their young defenders, edge rusher Jalyx Hunt, perform well in his one shot before training camp to prove himself.
CBS Sports Eagles reporter Jeff Kerr gave some insights into the big moments from minicamp. Hunt's dominance on the field gave Kerr confidence that the second-year man is poised for big things.
"The Eagles are giving Hunt an opportunity to start at one of the edge rusher positions, as the second-year player is getting first-team looks with Nolan Smith still on the mend (torn triceps). Hunt was pretty active in the team periods, notching two sacks on the afternoon and being a disruptor in the backfield. Hunt got to Hurts on a miscommunication amongst the offensive line for the first sack, but the second sack was him beating (Jordan) Mailata -- and frustrating the All-Pro left tackle in the process.
Hunt looks primed to have a good summer and a breakout year, which would ease a lot of doubts regarding how to fill the voids left by Josh Sweat and Milton Williams."
Last year's third-round pick of the Eagles did not get a ton of time on the field, but Hunt showed promise when he did play, as he racked up 21 tackles, three quarterback hits, two forced fumbles, 1.5 sacks, one tackle for loss, and one pass deflection in 16 games. He was just as good in the postseason after 10 tackles, three quarterback hits, 1.5 sacks, and one tackle for loss in four games. That included his half sack and one quarterback hit he got on Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes in the Super Bowl win.
Going into the offseason, Hunt was going to be in contention to be one of the starting edge rushers after the departures of Josh Sweat to free agency and Brandon Graham to retirement. Nolan Smith Jr. locked up his spot already, and with Bryce Huff traded to the San Francisco 49ers, Hunt is in line to be the other starter.
Hunt is not guaranteed one of the starting spots as he still has to compete with Azeez Ojulari and Josh Uche. His two sacks at the minicamp workout should give Hunt a leg up on Ojulari and Uche.
Training camp will give Eagles fans a clearer picture of who is going to start on defense, but the 24-year-old Hunt's dominant performance on the field Tuesday should have everyone excited .
