The Philadelphia Eagles are set for yet another trade deadline of hoovering up role players with some of their treasure trove of draft picks to be dangled as possible enticements for rebuilding teams. It's clear that this team's two worst units are both on the defensive side of the ball.
The pass rush, even with Brandon Graham triumphantly coming out of retirement, is still not in tip-top shape. The cornerback room is led by a few above-average standout players and a mishmash of backup-level talent trying their best to keep everything together.
These issues prompted NFL.com to list the cornerback room as the biggest issue the Eagles face ahead of the trade deadline. Howie Roseman is always going to look for value, and that desire might bring him back to someone who started his career in Eagles green.
Rasul Douglas is begging for a contender to rescue him from the Miami Dolphins, who may be a very motivated seller if they continue to scrape the bottom of the barrel. Douglas, who has improved upon his rough start to life in the NFL, might give this defense some much-needed veteran stability on the back end.
Eagles fans may not have fond memories of Douglas, a New Jersey native who came to Philly as a third-round pick way back in 2017. Douglas was roasted and toasted quite often early in his career, but he has since turned his career around after a very strong stint with the Green Bay Packers.
Douglas is currently trying to make some plays in a Dolphins secondary that is being held together by string and duct tape. Leaving that team and going to a more positive environment might be the magical secret ingredient that gets him back on track.
The Eagles don't need to overhaul their secondary when one considers Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean have been their usual selves this season, but bringing in Douglas would give them an instant upgrade at the second outside cornerback spot, all while keeping many of their premium draft picks intact.
Philly needs to bring in at least one more impact player now that the NFC has managed to catch up the defending champions. Douglas in Fangio's scheme could be an immediate uprade over the flotsam the Eagles have been trotting out next to Mitchell and DeJean, all for an affordable price.
