Eagles' Nick Sirianni opens up about A.J. Brown spat, drops in loss to 49ers

Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver A.J. Brown generated headlines for unwanted reasons during his club's 23-19 loss to the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday.

Cameras spotted him having a heated exchange with head coach Nick Sirianni after Brown dropped a pass late in the first half of the contest. Brown then committed another drop late in the fourth quarter on a key third-down play.

Following the defeat, Sirianni defended Brown regarding the spat and the 28-year-old's performance.

Nick Sirianni has love for A.J. Brown

"I was trying to get him off the field, because we were about to punt, and that was really it," Sirianni said about his sideline interaction with Brown, per Jack McKessy of USA Today. "I love A.J. I think he knows how I feel about him. I have a special relationship with him. We've probably went through every emotion that you can possibly have together. We've laughed together, we've cried together, we've yelled at each other. You know, we're both emotional. I was trying to get him off the field, and that happens in this game. That happens in this game, but I love him."

Rumors about Brown's future hovered over the Eagles throughout the fall after he made it known on multiple occasions that he was frustrated about his role in the Philadelphia offense that often left much to be desired during the season. Against the Niners, Brown tallied just three receptions for 25 yards.

Has Nick Sirianni lost faith in A.J. Brown after drops?

Brown signed a three-year, $96M extension with $84M in guaranteed money in April 2024. Nevertheless, outsiders have suggested for months that other teams will call the Eagles about his availability this winter.

Following Sunday's loss, Sirianni spoke like a coach who wants to keep working with Brown moving forward.

"He's got the best hands I've ever seen," Sirianni added. "The way he catches the ball, the amount of different types of catches that he's made. When you get as many targets as he does, you're going to have some drops."

Eagles left tackle Jordan Mailata insisted that Brown has "led with great humility and character" with the Eagles. Whether or not Brown will show such leadership with a different team later this year shall be seen.
