Everyone knows how great Philadelphia Eagles wide receivers A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith are as they are the solidified starters on the team, but who will Jalen Hurts turn to as his third option?
The most likely answer to that is Jahan Dotson, as the team traded for him last year to play that role. It was not played as well as Philly had hoped, after just 19 receptions for 216 yards in 17 games.
Dotson enters a pivotal year as the Eagles did not pick up the fifth-year option on his rookie contract, which means he needs to step up if he wants to stay as the third starter at receiver. He might want to be cautious, as a new veteran has caught the attention of everyone at training camp.
On the very first day of training camp, Terrace Marshall Jr. was making big plays for the Eagles. He had success on cornerback Kelee Ringo by beating him twice on deep routes.
Those are the type of plays that will catch the attention of his teammates. It certainly got Brown's attention.
"He's coming along quite well," Brown said via Tom Ignudo of CBS News. "Even in the spring, he was making a lot of catches. I know you guys didn't see it, but he's going to make the room very uncomfortable, you know? And that's a great thing, you know? And I'm excited to see the room continue to evolve. Not just him, but everybody push each other, so I'm excited."
The 25-year-old receiver is entering his fifth year in the NFL after spending three of those years with the Carolina Panthers and one with the Las Vegas Raiders. Marshall has caught 67 passes for 808 yards and one touchdown in 43 games.
There were initially high hopes for Marshall when Carolina selected him in the second round of the 2021 NFL Draft, but he wasn't able to do so. 490 yards was the most he has done in his career in one season, and he has been relegated to a fourth or fifth wide receiver on the depth chart.
Philadelphia would love to see him take a step forward and challenge Dotson for the third wide receiver position. Dotson could use a push to perform better on the field and he himself live up to his first round pick when the Washington Commanders picked him.
Training camp is a long way from being done, but Marshall is certainly making enough noise to get Eagles fans excited about what he can bring to the team.
