Eagles QB Jalen Hurts out with ankle injury, Gardner Minshew to start vs. Jets

The Philadelphia Eagles will be without Jalen Hurts for a Week 13 game against the New York Jets due to an ankle injury suffered last week in a loss to the New York Giants. Hurts was questionable to play after practicing on a limited basis all week, but he was officially ruled out about two hours before kickoff, according to Mike Garafolo of NFL Network.

With Hurts sidelined, the Eagles will turn to former Jacksonville Jaguars starter Gardner Minshew to fill in at quarterback.

Minshew, 25, was one of the surprise stories of 2019 when he was forced into action for the Jaguars early in his rookie season due to an injury suffered by Nick Foles in Week 1. The sixth-round pick led Jacksonville to a 6-6 record in 12 starts and finished the year with 21 touchdowns and six interceptions.

That impressive rookie campaign earned him the starting role in Jacksonville in 2020, but the team struggled to generate offense with Minshew at the helm. While he finished the season with 16 touchdowns and five interceptions, the Jaguars went 1-7 with Minshew starting and 0-8 in the games when he was on the bench. Jacksonville then used the No. 1 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft to pick quarterback Trevor Lawrence and opted to trade Minshew to the Eagles in preseason.

Minshew's only action so far in 2021 came when he briefly appeared in the fourth quarter of Philadelphia's 44-7 blowout of the Detroit Lions in October. He threw just two passes and completed both for 11 yards.

The Eagles are coming off their worst offensive performance of the year after turning the ball over four times against the Giants and scoring a season-low seven points. While no team has allowed more points than the Jets, the team is also coming off its best defensive performance of the season when it held the Houston Texans to just 202 yards of total offense.
