Eagles QB Jalen Hurts sent to hospital with stomach illness as precaution

Jalen Hurts missed Thursday's preseason game against the Philadelphia Eagles with a stomach illness, head coach Nick Sirianni told reporters afterward, according to NFL.com.

Hurts wasn't feeling well when he arrived at Lincoln Financial Field but wanted to go through warmups in an attempt to play. With the issue lingering, he was sent to the hospital as a precaution.

"Everything's good, and he's going to be OK," Sirianni said. "He had pain in his abdomen, which, for a guy like that to tell us, he's a tough guy, so it must have been hurting him pretty good for him to let us know about that."

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, doctors at the hospital diagnosed Hurts with a stomach infection that was causing pressure in his abdomen. The signal-caller was ordered to stay home for at least two days and rest.

The Eagles struggled in Hurts' absence, falling 35-0 to the New England Patriots. Veteran quarterback Joe Flacco completed 10-of-17 passes for 83 yards and an interception, while Nick Mullens completed 5-of-10 passes for 27 yards and a pick.

Hurts played just two series in Philadelphia's preseason opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers last week, completing three of seven passes for 54 yards.

While the Alabama and Oklahoma product has received the majority of first-team reps, Sirianni has not yet named his starter for Week 1.

The Eagles return to practice Sunday and have two joint practices with the New York Jets next week. Sirianni wouldn't commit to Hurts playing in the preseason finale next Friday, according to NBC Sports Philadelphia.

"Again, we'll evaluate how he's feeling these next couple days," he said. "But again, we get two practices against the Jets. Those are like games."
