An atypical offseason would be the consensus description for the Philadelphia Eagles in 2025 after dominating their way to carrying the Lombardi Trophy on Broad Street.
The Eagles suffered a setback in free agency, with key losses to Milton Williams, Josh Sweat, and Mekhi Becton. Philadelphia also moved on from multiple veteran defensive backs with C.J. Gardner-Johnson shipped to Houston and Darius Slay and James Bradberry being released.
However, Eagles general manager Howie Roseman also took care of some key guys, with Saquon Barkley, Lane Johnson, and Zach Baun getting contract extensions. Roseman also hammered the 2025 NFL Draft with great selections in linebacker Jihaad Campbell and safety Andrew Mukuba.
With multiple one-year contract signings in free agency and hard work in the NFL Draft, how would the Eagles' overall offseason be perceived by those outside the organization?
Bleacher Report writer Kristopher Knox shared report card grades on all 32 NFL teams as he broke it down by free agency/trade, draft grade, and overall grade. Here is how Knox graded the Eagles' overall offseason and specific categories:
Knox went into the success the team had in the draft and how promoting from within shouldn't go as disastrous as it did for Philadelphia after the Super Bowl loss in 2023.
"As is often the case for teams that win the Super Bowl, the Eagles lost a few key contributors this offseason. They traded safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson while losing Milton Williams, Josh Sweat and Mekhi Becton in free agency."
"Philly did, however, manage to re-sign linebacker Zack Baun and extend offensive tackle Lane Johnson."
"General manager Howie Roseman doubled down on the linebacker position by using a first-round pick on Jihaad Campbell. Andrew Mukuba and Ty Robinson were also drafted to help backfill Philadelphia's offseason departures."
"Perhaps the biggest departure, however, was that of offensive coordinator Kellen Moore, who left to become the Saints' head coach. Moore and defensive coordinator Vic Fangio helped Philly right the proverbial ship in 2025 after a double-coordinator change sunk it the previous season."
"The Eagles still employ Fangio and promoted passing game coordinator Kevin Patullo to replace Moore. This should help maintain some continuity, as Patullo has long had a role in the offensive game planning."
"The Eagles have done an excellent job of preparing for the future via the draft, and while they may take a slight step backward in 2025, they shouldn't fall completely flat as they did after losing coordinators Jonathan Gannon and Shane Steichen in 2023."
One note that needs to be mentioned is that even though the Eagles' free agency and trade grades were low, the moves made by Roseman were calculated and expected. 2025 is all about not only promoting coaches, but also promoting the younger players to starters.
Guys like Sydney Brown. Jalyx Hunt and Moro Ojomo will play bigger roles on the team in 2025. This will give the Eagles an idea of whether they are the franchise's future or if the team needs to look elsewhere during the season.
A solid NFL Draft has Philadelphia set up with plenty of depth and potential upside to be a Super Bowl-contending team for the next five to 10 years.
