Eagles' RB Rashaad Penny returns vs. Cowboys
Tommy Gilligan-USA TODAY Sports

Philadelphia Eagles running back Rashaad Penny will play on Sunday against the Dallas Cowboys for the first time since Week 2 against the Minnesota Vikings.

Absolutely nothing has been wrong with Penny. . . he has just been a healthy scratch due to a crowded Eagles backfield, and with running back Boston Scott inactive due to a personal matter, Philly made Penny active in his place today.

He is set to be used as the Eagles' No. 3 back behind D'Andre Swift and Kenny Gainwell but he could end up getting more touches than Gainwell.

Here's a look at the other Eagles players who are inactive vs. Dallas:

  • DE Derek Barnett: His first time inactive.
  • TE Grant Calcaterra: He is still under concussion protocol from the injury he sustained last week.
  • QB Tanner McKee: Philly's emergency backup quarterback.
  • CB Bradley Roby: He is still dealing with a shoulder injury that has kept him sidelined for three games.
  • RB Boston Scott: Missed practice this week due to a personal matter.
  • DT Moro Ojomo: Jordan Davis and Jalen Carter are healthy and active leaving no need for Ojomo today.

Penny, who has played just nine offensive snaps this season, has been waiting for most of the season to prove his doubters wrong.

"People say, for example, I’ve lost my explosion,” Penny said earlier this week, via Jeff McLane of The Philadelphia Inquirer. “I haven’t gotten a chance to even show that yet.”

Swift has been a surprising No. 1 running back this year for the Eagles, which has left less work for Gainwell and the others.

In the meantime, Penny has remained patient and extra healthy.

"I’m just taking them one day at a time," Penny said. "One thing about me, I won’t press anything that’s not supposed to be pressed, or [be] frustrated. I’m enjoying this. I’m enjoying it really.

“I’ve never been this healthy this long into my career. So I guess that’s the good aspect of it.”
