Although fourth-year offensive lineman Kenyon Green won’t receive a Super Bowl ring on Thursday night, at least he’ll get to suit up for the Philadelphia Eagles.
The Eagles officially re-signed Green, a 2022 Houston Texans first-round pick, ahead of Thursday’s opener against the rival Dallas Cowboys. Philadelphia added Green in a March trade that sent veteran safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson and a 2026 sixth-round pick to the Texans.
Philadelphia also acquired a 2025 fifth-round pick, which the Eagles subsequently used on Georgia linebacker Smael Mondon Jr.
An All-American at Texas A&M, Green started 23 games in three seasons with the Texans. Shoulder injuries cost the 6-foot-4, 323-pound Green all of 2023, as well as another five games last year.
The Eagles’ decision to bring Green back and place him on the active roster doesn’t bode well for three-time Pro Bowl guard Landon Dickerson, who had knee surgery last month. Although Dickerson returned to practice last week, he sat out Monday with a back injury.
Unfortunately for Eagles fans, Green’s ceiling is likely extremely limited. Pro Football Focus gave Green a 38.6 overall grade last year, ranking him 132nd out of 136 guards leaguewide. His 39.7 pass block grade at least ranked 107th, if you’re looking for a bright spot.
Although Green excelled in college, he’s repeatedly looked overmatched in the pros. That alone raises serious red flags, and his repeated shoulder problems — as well as a wrist injury this preseason — don’t help his cause, either.
The best-case scenario is that Green provides needed depth, at least for 2025. If the Eagles like what they see and both sides want to run it back next season, they can certainly work out another contract.
Otherwise, the Eagles can cut ties without suffering the consequences. For their sake, they should hope that Green only sees the field on special teams or in blowouts.
