Eagles’ Saquon Barkley Makes Concerning Retirement Admission: 'Out of Nowhere'

Saquon Barkley might pull a Barry Sanders. The star running back dropped a massive hint about his retirement, which may be concerning news for the Philadelphia Eagles’ fans.

While every Barkley fan celebrated him becoming the cover athlete for Madden 26, the 28-year-old shot for the fourth episode of former Eagles linebacker Chris Long’s Green Light podcast.

Long asked Barkley about his thoughts on retirement. Barkley replied,

I’ll probably be one of those guys who it’ll [retirement] be out of nowhere. I’ll probably just wake up one day, whether it’s next year or two years or four years, and just be like, ‘Yeah, it’s over.’

He is at the peak of his powers and will only get better, so the Eagles’ fans can breathe a sigh of relief because their All-Pro rusher is in for the long run. At the very least, he will stick around until his contract runs out. But it’s impossible to predict when someone hangs up their boots.

For instance, Saints quarterback Derek Carr shocked everyone by announcing his retirement at just 34, while Aaron Rodgers and Joe Flacco are still going strong in their 40s.

Let’s not forget about the legendary Lions running back Barry Sanders, who suddenly decided to retire by leaving a note in the newspaper. Barkley ominously mentioned him during the interview.

One of my favorite players of all time… is Barry Sanders, so probably similar to that. Maybe one day it’ll be out of nowhere. I’ll probably be ballin’ and just be like, yeah, [let’s] call it quits.

Does Saquon Barkley believe in the Madden curse?

The Eagle fans may be jubilant to hear Barkley being forever enshrined in the Madden world, but there’s a lingering fear at the back of their mind. Madden cover athletes’ track record raises concerns about excitement due to their past.

More often than not, they experience a massive dip in form and fortune. Some succumb to injuries, while others never manage to reach the same heights before they feature on the cover.

Does Barkley fear that? While speaking with Tom Pelissero on The Insiders, the Penn State graduate revealed he’s not worried too much about the curse.

I’m a believer in God… I’ve had injuries before. I tore my knee, I stepped on a foot and rolled my ankle, and was out 4 to 6 weeks, and there was no curse then. That’s just how life works.

Barkley was instrumental in the Eagles’ lifting their second Lombardi Trophy in franchise history in New Orleans. He led the league in touches (378) at the line of scrimmage, most scrimmage yards (2283), and 13 touchdowns during the regular season. In the postseason, he rushed 91 times for 499 yards and scored 5 rushing touchdowns.

This was a massive blow for the New York Giants, who drafted Barkley in the first round. After playing six seasons in the Big Apple, they released Barkley due to contract disputes. Owner John Mara was against the release, similar to the Giants trading Odell Beckham Jr. to the Cleveland Browns six years earlier.
