Eagles should pursue trade if Vikings RB Dalvin Cook is available

Depending on free agency shakes out, the Philadelphia Eagles could have a lot of holes to fill on their roster. Philadelphia has numerous key players hitting free agency, and retaining all of them will be virtually impossible.

General manager Howie Roseman will have his work cut out for him figuring out which players to bring back and which are expendable. A lot of people have pointed to the secondary as a potential need with cornerback James Bradberry and safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson set to be free agents.

On offense, the supporting cast around Jalen Hurts could be changed drastically as well. Pro Bowl running back Miles Sanders and his backup, Boston Scott, are both set to hit free agency. Philadelphia will try its best to retain both of them, but that may not deter them from making additions to their backfield.

Ahead of the trade deadline, the Eagles were seeking upgrades for their backfield. They checked in with the New Orleans Saints about making a deal for Alvin Kamara. Philadelphia also inquired with the Carolina Panthers about Christian McCaffrey before he was traded to the San Francisco 49ers.

With that in mind, it should come as no surprise that the Eagles were listed among the favorites in the hypothetical odds created for where Dalvin Cook of the Minnesota Vikings will be playing next season. Currently, over the salary cap and with Cook carrying a $14 million cap hit, there has been some speculation that he could be cut this offseason.

Based on odds created by Adam Thompson of Bookie.com, the Eagles would have odds of +450 and an implied probability of 18.2% to land Cook. The only team other than the Vikings with better odds than Philadelphia is the Miami Dolphins at +350 with an implied probability of 22.2%.

Cook is coming off an underwhelming season, by his standards, as he averaged only 69 yards rushing per game. That is the least he has averaged in a season since his second in the NFL in 2018 when he returned from an ACL tear. He also underwent a procedure on his shoulder this offseason, which will give teams a moment of pause as well.

If the price is right, it would not be surprising to see the Eagles get involved in the Cook sweepstakes, especially if they are unable to re-sign Sanders. If he moves on in free agency, there will be some real urgency for Philadelphia to make a splash at the running back position.
