The New York Jets seemingly had a Week 1 victory in their hands, but wide receiver Xavier Gipson coughed up a costly fumble on special teams that gave the Pittsburgh Steelers the football deep in Jets territory. Pittsburgh would take the lead, momentum, and eventually the victory from the Jets.
Head coach Aaron Glenn and the media crushed Gipson after the game, citing his costly fumble as a turning point in the game. Justin Fried of The Jet Press joined in to bash Gipson after Week 1.
"The Jets made the controversial decision to stick with incumbent Xavier Gipson as their starting punt returner over undrafted rookie Jamaal Pritchett, despite Pritchett clearly outplaying him throughout the summer," Fried wrote. "That decision backfired immediately on Sunday, as Gipson fumbled on two returns, including a costly fourth-quarter miscue that set up an important Steelers touchdown. In many ways, Gipson’s mistake was the difference in the game for the Jets.
"Head coach Aaron Glenn spoke critically of Gipson's mistake after the game, suggesting that changes could be made in the near future. Gipson’s job security might be just as shaky as his ball security."
Shortly after Week 1's game, the Jets opted to release Gipson. Soon after that, Gipson was picked up by the New York Giants in a shocking turn of events. But before he played a game with the Giants, they opted to release him, too.
On Monday, Gipson continued his tour of the East Coast, as the Philadelphia Eagles claimed him off waivers and waived offensive lineman Kenyon Green in the corresponding move.
It's hard to imagine Gipson carving himself a role on the Eagles' loaded offense, but he might be able to make an impact on special teams, especially with the new kick return rules.
Gipson has looked bad in his limited time this year, but he's flashed a lot of potential at the beginning of his NFL career. He's still quite young and talented, so if the Eagles can tap into his potential, it could be a steal of a waiver claim.
