Eagles sign former Penn State DT in free agency
Kim Klement Neitzel-USA TODAY Sports

It's always fun when the Philadelphia Eagles bring a guy home or closer to home.

The Birds announced on Tuesday that they are signing Penn State product defensive tackle P.J. Mustipher to a one-year deal.

In the Eagles' update, they also confirmed this past weekend's signing of linebacker Oren Burks.

Mustipher, 25, went undrafted last year and had a brief stint on the Denver Broncos' practice squad before joining the New Orleans Saints at the end of the season.

The 6-foot-4, 318-pound defensive tackle appeared in four games for the Saints, registering four tackles on 42 defensive snaps.

Before entering the the league, Mustipher started 13 games for the Nittany Lions during his senior year where he logged 38 tackles (19 solo) with a tackle for loss and one quarterback hurry. He was voted a team captain two years in a row and earned an All-Big Ten second-team nod by the coaches and a third-team nod by the media for his efforts. He also was awarded AP All-Big Ten second-team honors.

Additionally, Mustipher won the Penn State Tim Shaw Thrive Award for being an inspiration to his teammates and the Lions Pride Outstanding Senior Player Award.

Mustipher, a Maryland native, told Eagles reporters that he's happy to be back where his football career began.

"Seeing familiar faces is going to make my transition much easier," Mustipher said via the team's official website. "Being back in Pennsylvania, where I went to school for five years, is something I am looking forward to."

While Mustipher won't step into a large role in Philly, he will provide some necessary depth behind Milton Williams, Jordan Davis, and Jalen Carter.
