Eagles Sign Saquon Barkley Backup for Super Bowl

We don't yet know the full intentions for the Philadelphia Eagles had and their newest roster move.

But we know it has a chance to be a sweet ride for a guy who just got here - or rather, just got back here.

No, we're not talking about the Brandon Graham transaction, though that has a chance to be a heck of a Super Bowl story, too. (See below.)

This transaction for Philly, which whipped through the NFC Championship Game against the Commanders and now readies to go against the back-to-back champion Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LIX, is about backup-backup help.

The centerpiece key for the offense of the Eagles will of course be running back Saquon Barkley. He's in the MVP conversation after his spectacular 2,005-yard regular-season work ... and he's been even better in the playoffs.

The Eagles were No. 2 in the league in rushing yards gained with just a little help from backups Kenneth Gainwell and Will Shipley, who combined for just 105 carries between the two of them.

But now comes a bit more depth, at least for practice, in the form of a Thursday, signing of second-year man Lew Nicholls III.

Nicholls, who will join the practice squad now, had been with the Eagles in training camp. He was signed back to the practice squad in December before the yo-yo existence continued as he was waived on Dec. 31.

And now? Maybe Nicholls works in practice to mimic the KC backs as the Eagles and Chiefs ready to head to New Orleans this weekend before the Super Bowl on Sunday, Feb. 9.
