When New York Giants co-owner John Mara gave the order to not accept running back Saquon Barkley's final offer prior to free agency before last season, who knew it would trigger a series of events which will change Barkley's life forever.

First, Barkley made the move on 1-95 to Philadelphia where the Eagles gave him the money he was looking for. Next, he would come close to breaking Eric Dickerson's long-standing single-season rushing record of 2,104 yards..

He carried the ball 345 times for 2,005 yards and 13 touchdowns. He also caught 33 passes for 278 yards and two more scores.

Barkley's season earned him NFL Offensive Player of the Year honors, as well as a First-Team All-Pro selection. He was instrumental in helping the Eagles capture their second Super Bowl championship in team history.

Tuesday afternoon the dream continued to become reality as Barkley signed a two-year extension to his contract worth $41.2 million. Of that amount, $36 million is guaranteed. The contract extension makes Barkley the first $20 million running back in the history of the NFL.

Per Adam Schefter of ESPN, who broke the story on social media, Barkley also has the ability to earn an additional $15 million in incentives and escalators.

"Eagles are rewarding Saquon Barkley with a two-year, $41.2 million contract extension that makes him the highest-paid running back in NFL history, per sources," Schefter said. "The deal makes Barkley the NFL’s first $20 million+ per-year running back. Barkley also has the ability to earn an additional $15 million in incentives and escalators.

"The Eagles are taking the rare step of extending Barkley one year into his three-year deal - and in the same league year in which they signed him to the initial contract,"

Jeffrey Lurie showed why his teams win Super Bowls. He didn't have to extend Barkley, but he knows his value and wanted to reward him for an extraordinary season.
