The Philadelphia Eagles will have some tough choices to make at training camp with seven tight ends fighting for a projected three spots.
It's assumed at this point the top two tight ends will be Dallas Goedert and Grant Calcaterra. That's the part that's going to be the easiest to select for Philadelphia.
Who will be the number three tight end will be one of the most talked about position battles at training camp. Here are the five tight ends facing off for a spot on the 53-man roster:
All five are more than capable to be in that position, but who is going to win it? One of them stood out at mandatory minicamp that could make the decision easier.
NBC Sports Philadelphia Eagles reporter Reuben Frank shared more of his observations from the franchise and some thoughts on minicamp last week. Frank had a section on Muse who was on the practice squad for the Eagles last year as his big plays at minicamp might give him a leg up on the competition.
"Why are we even talking about Nick Muse? Because at the last OTA practice on Tuesday he made the best catch of the spring, laying out to make a diving snag of a Kyle McCord pass. Muse also had a sweet TD catch from McCord earlier in the same practice. Those catches came after TV cameras had to shut down, so you’ll never see them. But they were eye-opening. I can’t sit here and tell you Muse has a better shot at snagging a third tight end roster spot – a spot that may not even exist – than Kylen Granson, Harrison Bryant or E.J. Jenkins. But I can tell you that plays like that are noticed by coaches, teammates and GMs, and if Muse keeps making catches like that he’s sure not going to hurt himself."
Muse was a former seventh round pick of the Minnesota Vikings in the 2022 NFL Draft. He spent nearly three seasons with Minnesota as he only caught one pass for 22 yards in his 16 career games.
Last year, Muse was released by the Vikings and would be picked up by the Eagles and placed on their practice squad. He would not appear in a game, but did win a Super Bowl with Philadelphia as part of the roster in 2024.
It's encouraging to hear that Muse made some magnificent plays as the Eagles need to have depth at tight end. Goedert missed significant time last year due to injury so depth behind him and Calcaterra is critical.
Granson and Bryant have the most experience among the rest of the tight ends and would on paper have the advantage over the rest. Muse could throw a wrench in that with his great catches and helping sixth-round pick McCord in his development by scoring touchdowns.
The position battle at tight end just got more interesting with Muse throwing his name in the ring for the third-string job which is now becoming a even better problem for the Eagles to have with so much talent there.
