The Philadelphia Eagles have arguably the best running back in the NFL in Saquon Barkley, but that didn't stop general manager Howie Roseman from acquiring another weapon for the backfield.
On Monday night, the Eagles traded a fifth-round pick and sixth-round pick to the Jacksonville Jaguars in exchange for Tank Bigsby. The talented running back from Auburn had 766 rushing yards and seven touchdowns on 168 carries during the 2024 season. He only had five carries for 12 yards in Week 1 though.
Prior to joining the Jaguars in 2023, Bigsby was an All-SEC running back with the Tigers, rushing for 2,906 yards and 25 touchdowns from 2020-2022.
Unfortunately for Bigsby, he became expendable for the Jaguars since they already have Travis Etienne and Bhayshul Tuten.
If you're worried about Bigsby potentially cutting into Barkley's fantasy football production, just know this move was most likely made because of Will Shipley's rib injury. The Eagles needed to add a bit more depth to their running back room.
"The Eagles’ trade for Tank Bigsby is in part due to a need for another kick returner, sources say. He’ll be in the mix for that role with Will Shipley, who had one return against the Cowboys, dealing with a rib injury," NFL Network's Mike Garafolo.
At the end of the day, Barkley will still be the No. 1 option in the ground game. After all, he had 22 touches in the Eagles' season opener against the Dallas Cowboys.
The Eagles will get to showcase their new-look running back room this Sunday when they take on the Kansas City Chiefs in a Super Bowl rematch.
Barkley had 57 rushing yards in Philadelphia's 40-22 win over Kansas City last February. If we had to guess, he'll be much more productive this weekend.
Kickoff for the Eagles-Chiefs game is at 4:25 p.m. ET.
