Eagles trade up to draft controversial DL Jalen Carter, but is he worth it?

The Philadelphia Eagles traded up one spot from No. 10 to No. 9 to select Georgia defensive lineman Jalen Carter in the NFL Draft.

Carter, who many thought would be one of the first players off the board during the early stages of the draft process, fell on multiple team's draft boards due to character concerns.

On March 1, Carter was charged with reckless driving and racing in connection with a crash that killed a teammate and a recruiting staff member. He was released just minutes later after posting a $4,000 bond. On March 16, he was sentenced to 12 months' probation and community service.

As a player, the talent is undeniable. With the national championship-winning Bulldogs in 2022, Carter played in 12 games and recorded three sacks as an interior lineman. He was the anchor to one of the top run-stopping defenses in the country.

Despite being linked to Texas running back Bijan Robinson, who was drafted one pick prior by the Atlanta Falcons, the Eagles made a sensible pick. Since becoming the GM of the Eagles, Howie Roseman has made defensive line depth a point of emphasis.

If Carter stays out of trouble, he will likely enter a defensive line rotation with Fletcher Cox, Jordan Davis and Milton Williams, who all received playing time for the NFC champions last season.

Ian Rapoport of NFL.com said the Eagles are equipped to "get the best out of" Carter.

After allowing 38 points to the Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl, prioritizing defense makes sense for Philadelphia.
