Eagles Urged To Sign Intriguing Veteran Defensive Back
Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

The Philadelphia Eagles’ defense sustained a significant blow last week, as cornerback Avante Maddox suffered a torn pectoral muscle during his team’s Thursday night win over the Minnesota Vikings. The injury will knock Maddox out for the NFL season.

As a result, the Eagles are now pretty thin in their secondary, meaning they will surely need to patch up that hole at some point.

Philadelphia could choose to make a trade between now and the Oct. 31 NFL trade deadline, or, it could explore the free-agent market to see if there is anyone worth the club’s time remaining.

Bleacher Report suggests that the Eagles sign cornerback Bryce Callahan.

Callahan was last seen playing 15 games for the Los Angeles Chargers in 2022, registering 47 tackles, three interceptions, six passes defended and a defensive touchdown.

While it wasn’t Callahan’s strongest season overall, he was still moderately productive and probably represents Philly’s best option at nickel corner now that Maddox is sidelined.

Callahan, who played his collegiate football at Rice University, went undrafted in 2015 but caught on with the Chicago Bears as a free agent.

He ended up appearing in nine contests for the Bears during his rookie campaign, logging 21 tackles and a sack. Callahan impressed Chicago enough to remain on the team’s roster for four years, appearing in 45 contests and making 29 starts. His most fruitful season in the Windy City came in 2018, when he finished with 45 tackles, a couple of sacks, a pair of picks and six passes defended.

Following his time with the Bears, Callahan linked up with the Denver Broncos for two years, taking the field 21 times with 16 starts. His production level was similar to what he posted in Chicago.

The 31-year-old then joined the Chargers for one season.

The Eagles will look to improve to 3-0 when they take on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Monday night.
