Eagles veteran goes from undeniable to undesirable with minicamp disappointment

The Philadelphia Eagles are about a month away from training camp as the celebration phase of winning the Super Bowl in February is coming to a close.

They finished up their one day of minicamp as they are in the process of resting before training camp starts. There is plenty of young talent as there will be multiple position battles going on in Philadelphia.

The safety position might be one of the most highly contested battles between Sydney Brown, rookie second-round pick Andrew Mukuba, and Tristin McCollum. While Brown came in as the projected starter, it appears he has not done enough to separate himself from the pack.

Brown must do more in training camp to win the job

Throughout minicamp and OTAs, Brown was splitting reps with Mukuba on the first team. Cooper DeJean was also getting first-team reps, and Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio has already stated not to count McCollum out of the running.

In Philly Voice Eagles reporter Jimmy Kempski's article, he had included Brown in his stock being down after minicamp.

"Brown got first-team reps, but he had to split them rookie Andrew Mukuba. It was also probably not a great sign for Vic Fangio's trust in Brown when Fangio said that DeJean might play some safety in the base defense."

What could be hurting Brown's chances at winning the job right off the bat is the time he missed at the beginning of last season as he recovered from his injury. McCollum find time on the field which is what Fangio isn't ready to give the job to Brown right away

DeJean will steal reps away from Brown or whoever else starts at safety as Fangio wants DeJean at safety in certain packages. The question will be how often DeJean plays safety versus lining up in the slot.

Brown still appears to be the front runner to win the job, but Mukuka could very much be the starter next year with one season to develop and learn. The Eagles need to hope either Brown, Mukuba, or McCollum separate themselves for more security at the position.

Training camp is the perfect opportunity for Brown to do so, but right now, he's not giving Eagles fans the confidence they need to find the perfect replacement for C.J. Gardner-Johnson.
