Eagles waive former first-round pick Derek Barnett

The Derek Barnett era in Philadelphia has come to a close. The Tennessee product was waived today and is expected to find a new team shortly, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Eagles waive Derek Barnett

The Philadelphia Eagles drafted Derek Barnett with the 14th overall pick back in 2017. Since then, he’s gone on to record 21.5 career sacks, playing in 71 games and registering 141 tackles.

It is said to see Barnett leave Philadelphia, but his career has stagnated somewhat over the last few years. After he reached the end of his rookie deal, the defensive end continued to be brought back on questionable contracts despite his production dropping yearly after his 2019 peak.

Sprinkle in a schematic change and a splash signing in Haason Reddick, and the writing appeared to be on the wall for DB for quite some time. The Eagles were unable to move him this past offseason and will now let him find a new suitor after playing in just 20% of snaps this season so far.

Derek Barnett had some great moments in Philadelphia. His iconic play that helped seal Super Bowl 52 will live on forever, but he never quite turned out to be the player that the Eagles hoped he would be consistent. The flashes were always there, but they were merely that.

Here’s to hoping Barnett catches on with a new team and can revitalize his career. He’s still only 27-years-old so should have some upside to offer a new team.
