Elijah Mitchell's injury may change Deebo Samuel's role for 49ers

Deebo Samuel emerged as one of the NFL's best weapons last season, largely because of his ability to be used as a receiver and a running back. If Sunday's loss to the Bears was any indication, Samuel might be seeing more time in the backfield than he'd like going forward.

The 49ers lost running back Elijah Mitchell to a sprained MCL during Sunday's game, an injury that might keep him out for two months according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Samuel received eight carries out of the backfield, rushing for 52 yards and a touchdown in rainy Chicago. The 2021 All-Pro only finished with two receptions, though he was targeted eight times on a day in which passing games just weren't effective because of the weather.

With Mitchell out for most of the game, Samuel effectively split carries with Jeff Wilson Jr. Meanwhile, QB Trey Lance led the team with 13 rushing attempts. Wilson struggled his way to 22 yards, averaging 2.4 yards per carry.

Even if Wilson is the starter, Sunday's game was likely a window into what's to come. Samuel is the most dynamic option the 49ers have in their backfield with Mitchell out, and head coach Kyle Shanahan may have identified a capable pass-catcher who can help replace Samuel's receiving production: Jauan Jennings. The second-year receiver posted 62 yards on four catches in the loss. Tight end George Kittle is also on track for a return as early as Week 2 to aid the passing game.

NFL.com's Ian Rapoport hinted in June that Samuel wasn't thrilled with his dual role as a receiver and running back, though Samuel attempted to put an end to those rumors in August by declaring them "false."

Samuel requested a trade in April, but he ultimately signed a lucrative extension with the 49ers in July.

While Samuel insisted he had no problem being used as a running back, his usage found a way into contract negotiations: The deal includes nearly $2 million in incentives based on rushing stats.

Whether or not he's content with being used out of the backfield, Samuel might be able to make extra money as a result of Mitchell's injury.
