Eric Bieniemy already shaking up Commanders offensive coaching staff
Eric Bieniemy Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

Eric Bieniemy became the assistant head coach and offensive coordinator of the Washington Commanders over the weekend. Bieniemy has newfound responsibility with his new team. He gained complete control of Washington’s offensive coaching staff.

Just days into his new job, Bieniemy is already shaking up Washington’s offensive coaching staff. According to Matthew Paras of the Washington Times, the Commanders parted ways with senior offensive assistant Jim Hostler.

Hostler joined the Commanders in 2020. He was one of several assistants from the Carolina Panthers who followed head coach Ron Rivera to Washington. Hostler had the role of wide receivers coach in 2020 before he made way for Drew Terrell and became a senior offensive assistant.

Hostler has been with several teams in various offensive roles since joining the NFL’s coaching ranks in 2000 with the Kansas City Chiefs.

However, Hostler was not the only change on Tuesday. According to Josina Anderson of CBS Sports, Terrell will leave the role as Commanders wide receivers coach to join the Arizona Cardinals. The Cardinals asked permission to interview Terrell last week.

Terrell, 31, is one of the rising young coaches in the league. He got his first NFL coaching spot in 2018 under Rivera with the Panthers. However, with Bieniemy in town, Terrell moves on to the desert under newly hired head coach Jonathan Gannon.

Bieniemy spent the past weekend meeting with Commanders offensive coaches before signing with the team. It’s unclear if more changes are expected. But it’s becoming clear who is in charge of Washington’s offense.

The Commanders have been flooded with former Panthers assistants on the coaching staff thanks to Rivera. Two coaches with ties to the Panthers are now out, and that doesn’t include Scott Turner, the guy Bieniemy is replacing.
