Dallas Cowboys linebacker Eric Kendricks couldn't help getting emotional following his team's loss to the Cincinnati Bengals.
However, his emotion wasn't really coming from a muff punt that cost the Cowboys the game but rather from watching his teammate, DeMarvion Overshown, suffer a tough knee injury that we now know will require season-ending surgery and might even keep him from returning in 2025.
In the locker room postgame, Kendricks discussed the situation while getting choked up throughout the interview.
"It can't really be explained, especially when you're on the field and one of your guys goes down like that," Kendricks told reporters. "Especially for me, your fellow linebacker, I feel like it's hard."
Kendricks opened up about the players' perspective in such situations, admitting NFL players can get numb to injuries while acknowledging with Overshown, this wasn't the case for him.
"It's crazy because oftentimes we get so numb to injuries and things like that, we have to just carry on right away, and we're not really ready in that situation," Kendricks said. "I'm just feeling for him for sure right now, I know how hard he works, and it means a lot to him, means a lot to me."
"It's not really fair," Kendricks added. "Football's not really fair."
Kendricks isn't the first to bring up Overshown's work ethic. It's become apparent ever since he was a rookie in the offseason that he makes an impression on teammates and coaches because of how much he puts in. His performance this season, after spending his rookie year on the sidelines due to a preseason torn ACL injury, backs up all of those claims.
Overshown was on a meteoric rise this year and he looked like a legit future All-Pro at linebacker. He thrived against the run, in pass coverage, and even as a blitzer.
In a Thanksgiving sideline interaction caught on the team's "Sounds from the Sideline" video series, Kendricks was captured telling Overshown "I want you to be the best f***ing linebacker there is, bro, you have that potential, you've just got to keep putting that (work) in."
Overshown added on Monday he saw growth from Overshown even compared to where he was back in Week 1. He saw a player that went from insanely athletic to being a legit linebacker communicating on the field.
"He's a freak, he's a thug, too, if I know anything about him, I know he's going to be back and better than ever," Kendricks added.
Now, just like Cowboys fans, Kendricks will have to patient in seeing that come to fruition. Hopefully, Overshown comes back strong, be it in 2025 or 2026.
