Erin Andrews Reveals Why Mike Tomlin Gave Her a 'Panic Attack'

Last week, before the Eagles' convincing 27-13 drubbing of the Steelers in Philadelphia, Fox Sports reporter Erin Andrews did something rare: She sat down with Pittsburgh coach Mike Tomlin. It's rare because Tomlin does not do a whole lot of sit-downs, and because Fox has been NFC-focused for much of Andrews' career with the network, her path does not often cross with the coach's.

And because of Tomlin's reputation as a straight shooter and with his status as an NFL lifer and possible Hall of Fame coach, Andrews was a bit clammy before the interview. Perhaps even nervous.

Or, actually, in a full-on panic.

As Andrews said on her "Calm Down" podcast with Charissa Thompson, "Man, I was so nervous going into that interview. I didn’t sleep the night before. There are people that—and it is not like a star-struck thing, I don’t really get star struck—I just don’t get to really hang around Mike Tomlin very often. We don’t have the Steelers that often, that was my first time really sitting down with him.

"I just, somebody like him, I always looked up to, now this ‘Hard Knocks’ series has been amazing, you know he can sniff out bull(expletive) really, really quick. And someone like that, I never really want him to think that I am that."

On the day of the interview, working on little sleep, Andrews said she was trying to get focused but struggled as she kept asking herself questions in her head while members of the production team were also peppering her with questions and requests.

"I was like, ‘Stop talking to me! I am having a panic attack!’ I just wanted to get Zen," she said.

When Tomlin did come in to sit down, Andrews said the ice was broken pretty quickly thanks to a happy accident.

She explained: "All the sudden, the wreath that we had in the background falls, really hard, and all the ornaments shatter, and that was the thing that lightens up the mood. … The ornaments fall and shatter and it was like, ‘Coach, welcome to NFL on Fox, so great to see you, so glad you don’t need stitches right now.’

"It was awesome."
