ESPN Names Buccaneers Defensive Lineman 2026 X-Factor

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers spent much of 2025 searching for answers along their defensive front. One of their biggest answers could already be on the roster.

Calijah Kancey’s absence was impossible to overlook after another injury-shortened season. The former first-round pick played only two games in 2025, leaving Tampa Bay without one of its most explosive interior pass rushers.

That makes Kancey’s return one of the most important developments for the Buccaneers entering 2026. ESPN’s Ben Solak went a step further, identifying Kancey as one of the NFL’s biggest “X-Factors” for the upcoming season.

Tampa Bay Could Get Its Missing Piece Back

“Remember Kancey?” Solak wrote. “The Buccaneers’ 2023 first-round pick was the perfect running mate for Vita Vea through his first two seasons as a pro. Quick as a wink but still sturdy against the run, Kancey’s upfield penetration was a featured piece of Todd Bowles’ movement-heavy defensive front. When he was injured last season in Week 2 and absent every game until Week 18, the lack of pop in the Buccaneers’ pass rush was palpable … Kancey is a quick winner who can make life easier on the rest of his defensive line. He’s a ceiling-raiser — if healthy.”

That last part is the obvious caveat. Kancey has shown enough talent to become a major difference-maker, but his availability has prevented him from building the type of sustained impact Tampa Bay expected.

If he can stay healthy, however, Kancey could address one of the Buccaneers’ biggest defensive problems. His quickness from the interior can create opportunities for Vea and make life considerably more difficult for opposing quarterbacks.

The Bucs Haven’t Given Up on Kancey

Tampa Bay provided another indication of its confidence in Kancey earlier this offseason. The Buccaneers picked up his fifth-year option in April, keeping him under contract for the 2027 season.

“Bucs are picking up the fifth-year option for DL Calijah Kancey, which should be about $14.5 million for 2027,” Via Fox Sports Greg Auman. “Had he made a single Pro Bowl, for instance, it bumps the value up another $7 million.”

That decision came despite Kancey missing 23 of his first 51 possible regular-season games. The Buccaneers clearly still believe his upside is significant enough to warrant the investment.

His Biggest Battle Is Staying on the Field

Kancey was Tampa Bay’s No. 19 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. Injuries, unfortunately, have become a recurring storyline throughout his first three NFL seasons.

He missed three games as a rookie and five more games in 2024. His 2025 season was the biggest setback yet, with a torn pectoral muscle keeping him out for 15 regular-season games.

The injury was particularly disappointing because Kancey entered the season with enormous confidence. Before the season began, he predicted that a fully healthy campaign could result in him leading the NFL in sacks.

“I think you would be looking at the (NFL) sack leader,” Kancey told Buccaneers.com’s Brianna Dix before the season when asked what a fully healthy season by him might look like.

Kancey never received the opportunity to test that prediction last season. He didn’t record a sack in his two appearances before the injury ended his campaign.

The Production Is Already There

There is still plenty of evidence that Kancey can be a game-changing defensive lineman when healthy. He led Tampa Bay with 7.5 sacks in 2024 despite missing five games.

He also recorded four sacks during his rookie season while missing three games. Those numbers show why the Buccaneers remain so interested in seeing what Kancey can accomplish with an uninterrupted season.

Tampa Bay doesn’t need Kancey to actually become the NFL’s sack leader to benefit from his return. It needs the explosive interior disruption that made him such an intriguing first-round selection.

A healthy Kancey would give Bowles another weapon to attack opposing offensive lines. More importantly, his presence could elevate the entire defensive front.

That makes 2026 potentially more important for Kancey than any season he has played so far. If he can finally stay healthy, the Buccaneers could discover that one of their biggest defensive needs was already waiting for them.
