The 2025 NFL preseason has come to an end, as rosters are taking shape and starters are being announced ahead of Week 1. One move that surprised some Indianapolis Colts fans was head coach Shane Steichen announcing Daniel Jones as their starting quarterback over former Florida Gators star Anthony Richardson.
Richardson, who was the fourth overall pick by the Colts in the 2023 NFL Draft, started 11 games last year but has now been benched.
On Monday, ESPN's Bill Barnwell gave predictions for 10 trades around the NFL that would make sense. This included a move that would send Richardson to a team in need of a quarterback for the future.
Barnwell's proposal was for Richardson to head to the Pittsburgh Steelers in exchange for a 2026 fourth-round pick. The ESPN insider revealed that Richardson's team has made some noise about a distrust setting in between the former first-rounder and the Colts' organization.
This trade would set up Richardson on the Steelers for one of two reasons, Barnwell said.
"One would be for the future, which might charitably be described as a big question mark in Pittsburgh," he wrote. "Aaron Rodgers will turn 42 in December, while backup Mason Rudolph wasn't able to convince the organization to make him the long-term starter in his first stint with the team."
Rodgers, who signed a one-year, $13.65 million contract with the Steelers this offseason, is entering his 21st season in the NFL. With the uncertainty surrounding his future in the league, Richardson could be the team's next franchise quarterback.
"The other case revolves around Pittsburgh's offensive coordinator," Barnwell continued. "Richardson can inherit the package of run concepts Fields ran a year ago, and if Rodgers gets hurt or struggles, [Arthur] Smith could try to build an entire game plan around those strengths."
Richardson's rushing ability has been a big part of his game throughout his young career. In 15 starts with the Colts, he has run for 635 yards and 10 touchdowns.
If the Colts do move Richardson to the Steelers, one year to sit and learn behind one of the greatest quarterbacks ever in Rodgers might be just what the former Gator needs to jumpstart his career.
