ESPN Pushes Jets To Sign Amari Cooper As Justin Fields Target

The New York Jets will have a new quarterback in 2025 in Justin Fields, and they want to give him the best chance of succeeding that they can.

In a recent article by ESPN's Matt Bowen, he picks the best team fit for the biggest remaining free agents. One of the players he lists that could be a good fit for the Jets is veteran receiver Amari Cooper, who played with the Buffalo Bills after the trade deadline in 2024.

"Yes, the 30-year-old is showing signs of decline on tape, but he is still a detailed route runner who can uncover," Bowen writes. "He could be a solid target for quarterback Justin Fields on play-action concepts, getting open on deep in-breakers."

Cooper was traded by the Cleveland Browns to the Bills in a deal back in October. While he did not quite put up the numbers that many thought he would, he still made some solid contributions.

He started in two less games with the Bills than he did with the Browns in 2024, but he had 47 more receiving yards and the same amount of touchdowns with Buffalo. He also did this with 20 less targets.

But ...

Amari was essentially benched by the Bills when the heat got turned up in the playoffs.

And two years before that, the Dallas Cowboys trade-dumped him on Cleveland, believing he lacked what was needed to be a big-time, big-money reliable star.

And what about here?

While the Jets still have Garrett Wilson to be a weapon for Fields, losing Davante Adams can be a drastic change for a team. While Cooper might not be fully able to fill the hole he left behind, he and Fields could make some noise if they team up in 2025.
