ESPN ranks Justin Herbert 11th on top 100 players list

In ESPN's annual ranking of the top 100 NFL players, Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert checked in at No. 11. Despite his high ranking, ESPN projected the third-year QB's numbers would decline from 2021, but fantasy owners need not worry.

ESPN projected Herbert would throw for 4,259 yards passing, 34 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. He is also projected to rush for 270 yards and three touchdowns.

Last season, the 24-year-old quarterback threw for 5,014 passing yards, 38 touchdowns and 15 interceptions. He rushed for 302 yards and three touchdowns and finished second among quarterbacks in points per reception fantasy football leagues, according to Fantasy Pros.

Herbert’s expected drop in numbers shouldn’t dramatically affect his fantasy value. He’s still a top-five quarterback in the league with an offense that looks more potent every day.

Fifty ESPN NFL experts voted on the list based entirely on how they thought players would perform in the upcoming season rather than on past performance.

“Herbert shined as a second-year pro, turning in a Total QBR that ranked third in the NFL behind star quarterbacks Rodgers and Tom Brady,” Chargers NFL Nation reporter Lindsey Thiry wrote. “Now as a third-year pro and operating for a second consecutive season in coordinator Joe Lombardi's offense, Herbert is expected to take another step forward. Coaches and teammates have touted Herbert's improved communication and comfort level, noting his ability to take greater command of the offense.”

Chargers wide receivers Keenan Allen and Mike Williams are expected to put up big numbers again, and wideout Joshua Palmer is a breakout candidate. Recently added running back Sony Michel will complement Austin Ekeler and keep drives moving.

Fantasy managers who want a top-of-the-line quarterback should expect Herbert to come off the draft board in the third or fourth round.
