Ex-Eagles quarterback, Super Bowl MVP announces retirement

Foles, most recently with the Indianapolis Colts for the 2022-23 season, cited wanting to spend more time with his family in a video message to fans.

Drafted by Philadelphia in 2012 out of the University of Arizona, Foles spent his first five seasons as a backup until Carson Wentz went down with an injury during the 2017-18 season.

Foles then led Philadelphia to Super Bowl LII, defeating Tom Brady's New England Patriots 41-33 and earning Super Bowl MVP honors.

His meteoric rise over just seven games made him a hero to Philadelphia fans, immortalized in the team's annals by "The Philly Special" — the Super Bowl trick play that saw him score a touchdown at the end of the first half.

Foles' football career after that point was a struggle to maintain a starting position, never making double-digit appearances over the following five seasons while playing for four different teams.

Philadelphia posted in appreciation of the 35-year-old Thursday, announcing he would be officially retired as an Eagle at the home opener against Atlanta on Sept. 16.
