The Super Bowl-winning tight end who fathered two NFL quarterbacks and ended his career with the New York Giants has passed away. Don Hasselbeck, Super Bowl XVIII champion and father to Tim and Matt, suffered cardiac arrest and died this week at the age of 70.
"It is with deep sorrow that we share the passing of our father, Don Hasselbeck, who suffered cardiac arrest and passed away today," Matt wrote on his social media. "He was a great husband, father, grandfather, friend, coach, player, coworker, artist, mentor, and storyteller. Despite being an All-American at Colorado and a Super Bowl Champion with the Raiders, what we are most proud of is the leader he was for our family."
The 6-foot-7 Hasselbeck was a second-round draft pick by the New England Patriots in 1977. He spent seven seasons there before being traded in 1983 to the Los Angeles Raiders, where he won a ring and blocked an extra point in Super Bowl XVIII. After that stint he finished his career with the Minnesota Vikings and Giants. In New York in 1985 he played seven games, catches five passes and a touchdown.
During his nine-year career Hasselbeck caught 107 passes for 1,542 yards and 18 touchdowns in 123 regular-season games.
Hasselbeck was also the father of two NFL quarterbacks.
Matt was a three-time Pro Bowler throughout his 17-year career. He was drafted by the Green Bay Packers in 1998 but shined as the signal-caller of the Seattle Seahawks where he helped them reach Super Bowl XL during the 2005 season. Tim spent nearly a decade in the league, entering as an undrafted free agent out of Boston College in 2001 and playing four seasons including a two-game stint with the Giants in 2005.
