Ex-Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum tells Jerry Jones to draft Dak Prescott’s replacement despite claiming he is better than Michael Penix Jr.

Mike Tannenbaum , former general manager of the New York Jets and Miami Dolphins and reporter for ESPN, believes that it is high time for Jerry Jones to consider drafting a quarterback in this draft. 

His extension is going to be somewhere between $55-65 million dollars a year, and let's just say they start at $24, last year that was about $3.3 million a year in terms of what Deontay Banks got. Now all of a sudden if you can have someone like Michael Penix who to me has a chance to be a star, assuming he can stay healthy, I don't think Dak Prescott is $55-56 million per year better than someone like Michael Penix. Mike Tannenbaum said

The former general manager believes it does not make sense to pay Prescott $55 million per year when the team has a shot to draft a young quarterback such as Michael Penix who can play at a similar level with some experience. 

If Penix can stay healthy, he gives the Cowboys just as good a shot to make the Super Bowl, and ultimately, there is not much difference between his skillset and that of Prescott.

The biggest advantage of not paying Dak Prescott such a huge amount would be that the Dallas Cowboys would be able to retain all of their stars on offense and defense. With the team’s stars Micah Parsons and CeeDee Lamb all entering the final year of their rookie deals, it has become important for the Cowboys to start clearing cap space to be able to facilitate substantial contracts for the next season.

Tannenbaum believes that by drafting Penix this year and allowing Dak Prescott to play in the final year of his contract, the team would benefit overall. It gives the rookie a chance to learn from him, and he will be ready to take over when called upon.

It seems unlikely that Jerry Jones would entertain this thought, but there is no guarantee in which direction he will take the Cowboys.
