Ex-Steelers Player Making A Powerful Campaign On South Side For Patrick Peterson Reunion: 'I Am Politicking'

The Pittsburgh Steelers brought in eight-time Pro Bowl defensive back Patrick Peterson ahead of the 2023 season. He played both cornerback and safety, providing a veteran presence in the locker room. Despite his contributions, the Steelers decided to release Peterson after the 2023 season. However, there is hope for a reunion, with the possibility of Peterson rejoining the Steelers for the 2024 campaign.

Peterson has expressed a strong desire to work out a deal with the Steelers, but nothing has materialized yet. As Organized Team Activities (OTAs) began in Pittsburgh, former Steelers player Bryant McFadden, who is also Peterson's cousin and podcast co-host, was present.

During a new episode of their All Things Covered podcast, Peterson and McFadden discussed OTAs. McFadden noted that all the players still speak highly of Peterson. One player significantly impacted by Peterson was then-rookie cornerback Joey Porter Jr. He was vouching for Peterson during his time speaking to McFadden.

“I got a chance to chop it up with Joey Porter Jr. as well. He spoke highly of you. He still considers you to be his guy. A guy that really helped him excel his rookie campaign.”

McFadden also revealed that during his time at OTAs, he campaigned for his cousin's return. With Porter's praise of Peterson and McFadden's efforts to advocate for him, many prominent figures in Pittsburgh have vouched for Peterson. The veteran stars have all spoken very highly of him as well.

“I had some conversations about you. You already know I am politicking, I am politicking, I am politicking so we are going to see how it goes.”

Peterson explained that one of the main reasons he wants to return to the Steelers is his time with Mike Tomlin. During his brief tenure with the team, Peterson and Tomlin developed a great relationship. Peterson would love to play for Tomlin again, crediting his leadership for guiding the team through some challenging moments during the 2023 season. Although Peterson has played for several coaches throughout his career, his one year with Tomlin appears to stand out as his favorite.

Peterson is nearing his 34th birthday, and at this stage in his career, he likely wouldn't command a hefty contract. His performance has declined from his peak years as a defensive back, a fact evident to Steelers fans when he transitioned to safety as injuries mounted. While Peterson wasn't the standout player on the Steelers' defense, he held his ground admirably. He believes that with adequate time to work out as a safety and fully learn the position, he could significantly improve his performance.

If the Steelers were to bring him back, it would greatly benefit the young cornerbacks on the team. Peterson's presence would provide invaluable mentorship to these developing players and add much-needed depth to the roster. Having a seasoned veteran like Peterson around is always beneficial, both in the locker room and on the field. The cornerback position in Pittsburgh is currently occupied by young and relatively unproven talent, making Peterson's experience even more valuable.

Steelers' Patrick Peterson Still Has His Jersey Available

The prospect of Peterson returning for another year is intriguing. McFadden has even joked that no one is wearing Peterson's jersey number, hinting at a possible return. Steelers fans would undoubtedly welcome him back, as he was a beloved member of the Pittsburgh community and a fan favorite known for his positive attitude and relentless effort. 

Peterson has expressed his gratitude for the opportunity the Steelers gave him to showcase his versatility, and his willingness to play wherever needed was always appreciated.
