Executive shares why Broncos' Bo Nix could be best rookie QB

Denver Broncos rookie Bo Nix was the last quarterback taken in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft, but is he in the best position to succeed?

In his preseason awards poll, three voters told The Athletic's Jeff Howe Nix (pick No. 12) would have a better rookie season than Washington Commanders QB Jayden Daniels (pick No. 2) and Chicago Bears QB Caleb Williams (pick No. 1). Nix still finished third in the survey.

"Because of [head coach] Sean Payton," an executive said when Howe asked why he thinks Nix will have the best rookie season.

While Payton was New Orleans Saints HC from 2006-21, he helped future Hall of Fame QB Drew Brees make 12 Pro Bowls. Thus far, Payton seems to like Nix and wants to help him excel.

"We're not in a hurry to arrive at those types of decisions," Payton said after naming the Nix the starter in August, via ESPN's Jeff Legwold. "He's been outstanding. Obviously, there's a ton of room for growth, a lot of things he needs to work on ... but there is a maturity level with him."

Nix's poise should help him handle high expectations. On Sunday against the Seahawks, the 24-year-old will be the first rookie QB to start for the Broncos since HOFer John Elway in 1983.

On Wednesday, Nix became the first Broncos rookie to be named a captain since HOF RB Floyd Little in 1967, via ESPN's Adam Schefter.

The organization is clearly in Nix's corner, which could build his confidence. Perhaps this makes him a viable Offensive Rookie of the Year candidate, along with Williams and Daniels. As of Wednesday, FanDuel gives him the fourth-best odds (+1100) to win the award.
