Expert Gives Early Insight Into Dolphins Starting Secondary Amid Jalen Ramsey Conflict

There is a lot of pressure on the Miami Dolphins to compete for a playoff spot after experiencing a significant decline between 2023 and 2024.

If there is one serious area of concern that causes more of the Dolphins’ falloff, it will be the secondary. The conflict between the Dolphins and seven-time Pro Bowl cornerback Jalen Ramsey isn’t going away. All signs continue to point to the Dolphins trading Ramsey this Summer or before the 2025 league trade deadline.

The Dolphins took the field for OTAs, and there were some big changes in the secondary because of Ramsey’s holdout.

Palm Beach Post's Joe Schad gave his preview of the top five storylines for the Dolphins going into OTAs. One of the biggest was the question of the starting secondary without Ramsey. Without Ramsey, the Dolphins' entire cornerback group is mostly young and inexperienced.

To many people's surprise, Duck Storm and Kader Kohou are taking the first-team reps at cornerback.

Kohou played in 15 games for the Dolphins last season while starting in nine of them. He played a lot of his plays as a nickelback. Storm played 14 games last season as an undrafted rookie while starting in three of them.

Schan expects Cam Smith and rookie Jason Marshall Jr. to compete for a starting spot. After playing 15 games as a rookie in 2023, Smith only played in six games while battling through injuries. Miami selected Marshall in the fifth round (No. 150 overall pick) in the 2025 draft. He is coming off four impactful seasons with the Florida Gators.

Other players that will contend for a starting spot with the Dolphins' cornerbacks are former Seattle Seahawks' Artie Burns and third-year veteran Ethan Bonner.

Schad also believes the Dolphins could find one of their key starters in free agency.
